We would like to warmly invite you to participate in the KITP program on “Exploring new boundaries in Cosmology and Astrophysics: Cosmic Microwave Background and Large Scale Structure”, which will run from January 12, 2026 to March 5, 2026 at KIPT in Santa Barbara. We aim to brainstorm and establish novel approaches to cross-correlation sciences, given the exciting, upcoming large datasets from the CMB, galaxy redshift surveys and intensity mapping experiments. Please see the program rationale below. The registration is now open until December 8, 2024.
As customary, there is also an associated conference on “New Synergies on Multi-probe Cosmology” during Feb 3-6, 2026.
KITP provides housing support for participants, and has a family fund program to help participants with children and dependent adults.

3. MW-Gaia Doctoral Network school on “Galaxy modelling and Galactic Centre workshop” (9-13 December 2024, University of Surrey, UK)
Registration is now open for the MW-Gaia Doctoral Network school on “Galaxy modelling and Galactic Centre workshop” that will take place in University of Surrey, UK, on 9-13 December 2024.
The workshop is aimed at PhD students to learn advanced skills in Galaxy modelling and challenges in applying modelling techniques to reconstruct the structure of the Galaxy from a large volume of the complex observational data that Gaia will produce. There will be hands-on sessions for early stage researchers to apply some of these modelling techniques to the available Gaia data, and mock data which will be provided and supported by world-leading experts in this research field.
Spaces are limited to about 20 students, and there is no registration fee. Priority will be given to PhD students within MWGaiaDN (https://www.mwgaiadn.eu/).
This initiative is supported by Horizon Europe’s Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions Doctoral Network, funded under grant agreement no. 101072454 and also UK Research and Innovation (EP/X031756/1).
Registration and further details, can be found here:

4. Galaxy Memoirs; Inferring their past from their present (10-15th August 2025, Búzios, Brazil)
We are delighted to announce the conference, Galaxy Memoirs; Inferring their past from their present, will take place in Búzios, Brazil on 10-15th August, 2025.
Scientific rationale:
Clues to a galaxy’s past are encoded in its current appearance, and by hunting down these clues, we can infer much about the life histories of these objects. Detailed studies of small numbers of individual systems are complemented by large demographic surveys, and both approaches can be connected to galaxies’ high-redshift progenitors. Current cutting-edge instrumentation is being used to obtain a wealth of multi-dimensional information on morphology, kinematics, stellar populations, and gas properties, both within individual galaxies and across the population; the next generation of facilities offers even more exciting possibilities.
This conference seeks to bring together experts in the fields of galaxy dynamics, chemical evolution and galaxy environment to discuss recent results, foster collaborative discussion, and understand just how much of a galaxy’s past can be inferred from its present-day state. The meeting also honours the careers of Profs. Michael Merrifield and Alfonso Aragón-Salamanca, who have played important roles in advancing astronomy in this area.
Location:
The conference will be held in Búzios, a picturesque resort town on a peninsula in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Búzios is renowned for its 20 stunning beaches, vibrant nightlife, and the lively Rua das Pedras, filled with boutiques, restaurants, and bars. The town offers a variety of water sports, from snorkeling to surfing, and enjoys a tropical climate with warm temperatures year-round. Easily accessible from Rio de Janeiro, Búzios combines natural beauty with a sophisticated charm.
Registration and abstract submission commence on 2nd December 2024.

5. Asst Professor of Astronomy at the University of Virginia
Deadline: Dec 15, 2024
The Department of Astronomy at the University of Virginia invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position in cosmology with an emphasis on research areas related to cosmic microwave background (CMB) studies. This position is expected to begin in August 2025. The Department’s current CMB research activities are focused on developing instrumentation; we are looking to expand the scope of this research area to include theory, observation, and data analysis activities. The Department is particularly interested in candidates whose future research plans might leverage the University of Virginia’s membership in Simons Observatory, which is a new CMB experiment in the Atacama Desert in Chile. The review of applications is expected to begin on December 15th, 2024, and will continue until the position is filled.
The successful candidate will join a diverse department with expertise in experimental, theoretical, and observational astronomy, astrophysics, and astrochemistry. The Department is a partner in the new NSF-Simons AI Institute for Cosmic Origins (CosmicAI) and runs the Galaxy Evolution and Cosmology Initiative (GECO), the Virginia Institute for Theoretical Astronomy (VITA), the Virginia Initiative on Cosmic Origins (VICO), and the Virginia Astronomical Instrumentation Laboratory (VAIL). The Department also has strong research ties with the National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO) and the North American ALMA Science Center, which are located on the grounds of the University of Virginia, and the NRAO Central Development Laboratory, which is located nearby in Charlottesville, VA. The Department is also a partner in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey and has guaranteed access to the 2 x 8.4-m Large Binocular Telescope, the 6.5-m MMT, the two 6.5-m Magellan telescopes, and the Astrophysical Research Consortium telescopes at Apache Point Observatory.More info here.
6. Postdoc in experimental cosmology at Boston University
Deadline: Dec 15, 2024
The Boston University Department of Physics invites applications for a postdoctoral scholar in the experimental cosmology group working with Prof. Kirit Karkare.
The BU experimental cosmology group focuses on testing fundamental physics and early-universe astrophysics using observations of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) and high-redshift galaxies with millimeter-wave line intensity mapping (LIM). We are particularly interested in advancing mm-wave LIM as a cosmological probe and constraining inflation with degree-scale CMB polarization. Our work takes place in the BICEP, CMB-S4, SPT-SLIM/SPT-3G+, and SuperSpec collaborations.
We seek candidates interested in any of the following areas:
Design, testing, and operation of mm-wave telescopes and detectors, including R&D on superconducting spectrometers for LIM.
Analysis of CMB/LIM data, including constraining instrumental systematics and foreground/signal separation.
Developing the science case, instrument concept, and analysis techniques for future LIM experiments.
Previous experience in mm-wave instrumentation or CMB/LIM data analysis is desirable but not required. In addition to our experimental collaborations, successful candidates will also have the opportunity to interact with the growing BU cosmology community (https://sites.bu.edu/cosmology/).
Candidates should have a Ph.D. in physics, astronomy, or a related subject prior to starting the appointment. Applicants should send a CV with publication list, cover letter (2 pages max), statement of research experience and future plans (3 pages max), and arrange for three letters of reference to be sent to kkarkare@buphy.bu.edu by December 15, 2024. We expect to fill this position no later than Fall 2025.
