1. workshop “anomalies in cosmology” (November 29/30th, LAPTh, Annecy-le-Vieux)

We would like to advertise the workshop “anomalies in cosmology” organized in the context of the corresponding “transverse task force” of the GDR CoPhy, to take place on November 29th and 30th at  LAPTh in Annecy-le-Vieux.
You will find more information about the workshop below, and on the website https://indico.in2p3.fr/event/30622/overview.

Rationale:
With the advent of “precision cosmology”, a number of anomalies of diverse statistical significance has emerged. These include, but are not limited to: the “Hubble tension” between measurements of the Hubble parameter with a variety of late-universe probes (cepheid-calibrated supernovae in particular) and its prediction from the LCDM model fit to early-universe data (Planck CMB data in particular); the “S8 tension” between the amplitude of the clustering measured via weak-lensing surveys and that predicted by the Planck/LCDM cosmology; a recent “growth factor” tension which reminds of the S8 tension; as well as older long-standing “cosmic dipole” anomalies, the famous “lithium problem”, and even some intriguing anomalies within Planck data. As of yet, it is not clear whether these anomalies are connected to each other, or even that they are cosmological in origins. The workshop “anomalies in cosmology” aims to gather the efforts of cosmologists interested in these growing (potential) issues of the LCDM model, in order to foster works to better characterize what sorts of systematic effects could be at play, or conversely, what sorts of new physics would be responsible for these anomalies. This will also serve as a platform to discuss with astrophysicists and particle physicists interested in these topics, whose expertise could help the cosmology community in understanding the origin of these anomalies.

Focus of the first workshop:
The workshop “anomalies in cosmology” is organized in the context of the corresponding “transverse task force” of the GDR CoPhy.

The first meeting will take place on November 29th and 30th, and will be hosted by LAPTh, in Annecy-le-Vieux. It will focus on “cepheids”,  a key part of the distance ladder. The program includes:

  • A review of the Hubble constant measurement by SH0ES
  • A review of cepheids for cosmology
  • A review of potential systematics with cepheids/SN1a
  • Many discussions around the present and future of “cepheid cosmology”
  • Hands-on session on data analysis (TBC)

Invited speakers:

  • Richard Anderson (EPFL Lausanne)
  • Pierre Kervella (Obs. de Meudon)
  • Pierre Astier (LPNHE)

Organizing committee: Alain Blanchard, Vivian Poulin, Mickaël Rigault, Pasquale Serpico

2. Workshop on “Fundamental Physics at the Galactic Centre” (December 15-18, Porto, Portugal)

The workshop will take place in the beautiful Palácio da Bolsa in Porto, Portugal, from December 15th until December 18th. The formal talks will take place on the 15th, on the morning of the 16th and on the 18th, giving you plenty of time to enjoy the city of Porto for the rest of the weekend.

The idea of the workshop is to join theoreticians and multi-messenger observers (including GW observations) on the use of this nearby extraordinary laboratory to test new physics.

Deadline for abstract submission is the 10th November, but the registrations are limited, so please register as soon as possible if you are interested in attending.

3. Conference “Cosmology in the Alps” (18-22 March 2024, Les Diablerets, Switzerland)

Registration and abstract submission is now open for the first edition of the “Cosmology in the Alps” conference, organized by the SKA Switzerland Consortium (SKACH) and taking place next March 2024.

This conference will focus on radio cosmology studying the universe on large scales and aims to bring together experts in the field together with early career researchers. It will be the occasion to foster developments in radio Cosmology, highlight early career researchers from across the globe and highlight Swiss Contributions to the global Cosmology landscape.

Dates: 18-22 March 2024
Location: Les Diablerets, Switzerland

4. Postdoc positions at CPT

Deadline: December 15th, 2023

The Centre de Physique Théorique (CPT) at the Aix-Marseille University in Marseille (France) invites applications for two postdoctoral positions in theoretical physics funded by the Fondation A*Midex Initiative of Excellence Grant “Gravitational wave path to Cosmology” (GPAC). Ideal candidates will have a recent PhD in Physics, strong skills and interests in theoretical and fundamental physics.

Both  positions have duration of 2+1 years starting in Fall 2024.
One of the two positions is in collaboration with IPhT, Saclay, in the person of Filippo Vernizzi. The successful candidate is expected to spend about half of the entire time of the fellowship there.

The CPT’s cosmology team consists of five permanent staff members. Their research covers quantum and theoretical cosmology, dark energy and modified gravity, the physics of large-scale structures, and that of gravitational waves, thanks to the newly formed group of Michele Mancarella starting in 2024.

Applications consist of a CV with a list of publications and a research statement to be sent in a single pdf file at cosmology.cpt@gmail.com .

The application deadline is December 15th, 2023, though we will consider applications until the positions are filled.
Candidates should also arrange for at least two reference letters to be sent separately by the application deadline to the same address.

5. Three post-doc positions in Cosmology with BROWSEPOL (Ferrara/Padova/Bologna, Italy)
The Cosmology groups at the University of Ferrara (UNIFE), University of Padova (UNIPD) and at the Observatory of Astrophysics and Space Science of Bologna (INAF), invite expressions of interest for three post-doc positions at each location, for two years.

The positions are funded by the PRIN project “BROWSEPOL: Beyond standaRd mOdel With coSmic microwavE background POLarization”. BROWSEPOL aims at the theoretical and phenomenological investigation of fundamental physics signatures beyond the standard cosmological model, including, e.g., signatures of parity violation arising in the context of Cosmic Birefringence or in other observables.

The research work will be focused on the development of theoretical models (related to inflationary or late time universe physics) and new predictions of the corresponding CMB phenomenology, on the implementation of new analysis techniques to CMB polarization data, as well as on the forecasts for next-generation CMB experiments focused on B-modes, including SO, CMB-S4 and LiteBIRD.

All the research work will be carried on in strong synergy by the three above mentioned units through closely connected activities. The successful applicants will benefit from a lively and stimulating environment at all three locations as they will become part of active cosmology groups composed of several staff, postdocs, PhD and undergraduate students.
The position in

The salary ranges from about 25000 to 30000 euro/year (gross, taxes about 28.4%, the precise salary will be specified in the official call for applications). The positions come with a dedicated travel budget.

Those interested should write an email to any supervisor above, including a short CV (maximum 2 pages), a complete list of publications and the names and email addresses of up to three referees who might be asked to provide a letter of reference.

6. INFN postdoc positions (Ferrara, Italy)
Deadline: November 26
The successful candidates will work with me and the local cosmology group in Ferrara on ERC and Italian funded projects. In particular, the
researchers will analyse and interpret CMB data in light of light relics physics from current and future experiments, with a focus on the
ground-based Simons Observatory, and contribute to the preparation for future experiments such as the LiteBIRD satellite and the ground-based
CMB-S4. The research topics include: likelihood analysis, cosmological model building and investigation of fundamental physics with upcoming
cosmological datasets, pipeline development for next generation CMB experiments, cross-correlation of CMB data with large-scale-structure
surveys, link to high energy theories and comparison with astrophysical/laboratory experiments, statistical methods for data analysis.
