1. AGN and Polarimetry conference (Nov. 2-4th 2020, Strasbourg, France)
Title: Towards a panchromatic understanding of the polarization of Active Galactic Nuclei

Rationale: Among all the observational techniques used in astronomy, polarimetry has been fundamental to determine the nature, geometry and physical mechanisms of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN). Polarimetry, either using broadband filters, spectroscopy, timing information, or imaging capabilities, has made history by unveiling the importance of the nucleus inclination in the vast zoology of quasi-stellar objects. Polarimetry revealed the physical origin of the featureless continuum, constrained the magnetic field intensity and topology in jets, detected strong and asymmetrical outflows from the inner AGN region, exposed the alignment of quasar polarization with large-scale structures and continues providing new information on the morphology and chemistry of extra-galactic dust. However, despite these great advances, the panchromatic polarization of AGN is far from being understood. The principal reason is the fact that radio measurements are restricted to narrow bands, infrared polarimeters are scarce, and high energy data (far ultraviolet, X- and gamma-rays) are simply missing.
The upcoming era of gigantic radio arrays (SKA, HERA, ngVLA), millimeter dishes (ALMA, EHT, AtLAST), large-class ground-based and space born telescopes (JWST, LSST, ELT, SPICA) and high energy polarimeters in space (IXPE, eXTP, LUVOIR/POLLUX) indicates that this is the perfect time to meet and gather all the recent AGN polarization discoveries. This conference is meant to summarize our current understanding of the panchromatic polarization signatures in AGN from observations and modeling, determine the best strategy to fill our knowledge gaps, learn about the new generation of instruments that could be beneficial to the field and make a strong case for the inclusion of polarimeters in any new observatory.

General information:
This three-days conference will be held at the University of Strasbourg, France, from Monday the 2nd (morning) to Wednesday the 4th (afternoon), in November 2020. An invited speaker will give a review talk at the beginning of each half-a-day session, followed by shorter contributed talks. Posters are welcomed. The theme of each session will be given after receiving all the presentation proposals. We strongly encourage talks on current and forthcoming telescopes and satellites that will provide polarimetric data. Talks on the polarization from AGN-related physics and objects (particle production in jets, non-active galactic nuclei and smaller-scale black holes) are also greeted. Social events around Alsatian cuisine and wine are planned. Finally, depending on the pandemic situation, online talks will be arranged for speakers who will not be able to travel to France.

In view of the current situation, the meeting of the working groups “Nuclear astrophysics” of GdR RESANET and “Neutron stars and supernovae” of GdR Ondes Gravitationnelles planned for 9-10 june in Caen, will take place remotely.
Matteo Barsuglia (APC), Nicolas Chamel (ULB) and Francesco Nitti (APC) have agreed to present webinars with time for discussion.

3. Science with the Hubble and James Webb Space Telescopes VI (Stockholm, Sweden) POSTPONED
The organizers of the Science with the Hubble and James Webb Space Telescopes VI have decided to postpone the conference to 2021 because of the continued disruption to travel caused by COVID-19.
The conference will still be held in person at the Hotel Hasselbacken in Stockholm, at a date to be announced in October 2020.

4. Postdoctoral Scholar Position for the Simons Observatory at the University of Pennsylvania

The Experimental Cosmology Group at the University of Pennsylvania invites applicants for a postdoctoral scholar position working on Simons Observatory (http://simonsobservatory.org) to study the cosmic microwave background (CMB). The start date is flexible, but nominally, the fall of 2020. The Simons Observatory is a world-leading collaboration in CMB is undertaking both cutting-edge CMB science and technical development crucial toward the next-generation CMB-S4 experiment. Successful candidates will be involved in the design, construction and execution of the Simons Observatory. In particular, the Penn team will be commissioning the Large Aperture Telescope Receiver (LATR) and the six-meter diameter Large Aperture Telescope (LAT). The LATR is the largest CMB camera ever constructed and its integration requires a broad set of skills including cryogenics, detectors, optics, mechanical design, software, and electronics. Strong organizational and interpersonal skills are also important aspects of working in a collaboration like the Simons Observatory. Travel to Germany for the LAT integration and the high mountains of Chile may be required. Applicants with a broad spectrum of skills and experience are encouraged to apply.
Applicants should have a Ph.D. in Physics or Astronomy before the start date of the position. They should have at least one year of relevant research experience as a graduate student or as a postdoc.
