2. BlueMUSE Science workshop (November 9 and 10, remote)
The overall program of talks at the BlueMUSE science workshop, initially scheduled in Spring and postponed
as a virtual meeting on November 9 and 10, is now available on the website:

https://bluemuse-sw.sciencesconf.org/

The selected contributions cover large topics from Solar System to distant galaxies.

Please register on the website if you are willing to attend and receive the connection details.

  • Jean-Pierre Bourguignon (ERC): On General Relativity
Abstract: In this brief introduction, we wish to emphasize the incredible interweaving between physics and mathematics in the theory of general relativity. We will discuss the key-collaborations in this field between Einstein and both Grossmann and Hilbert in 1913 and in 1915.
  • Julien Lesgourgues (RWTH Aachen): Why did Einstein’s equation change completely our understanding of gravity?
Abstract: We often hear that according to General Relativity, our spacetime is curved. But we often miss the deep meaning of this statement: it implies that in every point, there is an invisible field, a bit like the electromagnetic field, but playing a different role: this field can dilate space and time! This concept is not that difficult to understand if, like Einstein, we accept to change completely our intuition concerning the nature of gravity. The dilation of space and time can be observed very concretely, for instance in gravitational wave detectors, or in several observations probing the expansion of the universe. I will do my best to explain these concepts in the most possible intuitive and accessible way.

4. Tenure-track Faculty Position in Cosmology at Cornell

Application deadline: November 15, 2020.

The Physics Department at Cornell University invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position pursuing observational and/or experimental cosmology research. Candidates with millimeter or submillimeter instrumentation and data analysis experience who have the desire to collaborate on the Cornell-led CCAT-prime project are of particular interest. The CCAT-prime telescope is a high-throughput 6 meter aperture telescope that is now under construction and will be built at a high-elevation site in Chile with first light expected in 2022. This project is an ongoing international collaboration that includes research groups in both the Cornell Physics and Astronomy Departments. Cornell researchers are involved in several related cosmic microwave background projects, including the Atacama Cosmology Telescope, the Simons Observatory, and CMB-S4, and are interested in combining measurements from CCAT-prime with these and future panchromatic and multi-messenger surveys.

5. KICP Postdoctoral Research Fellowship
Application deadline: November 15, 2020.

The Kavli Institute for Cosmological Physics (KICP) announces its 2021 Postdoctoral Research Fellowship competition. Scientists receiving a PhD in physics, astrophysics, astronomy, or related fields between May 2017 and September 2021 are invited to apply. Successful applicants will conduct original research in experimental, observational, numerical, or theoretical cosmological physics in areas of interest to the KICP faculty. KICP Fellows are appointed to renewable one-year terms, for up to three years. Our positions carry a salary and benefits package comparable to other prize fellowships.

The KICP provides a stimulating interdisciplinary environment. Current topics of interest to its faculty include: the inflationary era; dark energy; dark matter; experimental and theoretical studies of the CMB; analysis of cosmological data including CMB, large-scale structure surveys (especially the Dark Energy Survey), and type Ia supernova; gravitational lensing and gravitational-wave studies; observational cosmology; experimental particle astrophysics; near-field cosmology, and direct and indirect detection of dark-matter. The KICP has an active program of visitors, symposia, and meetings as well as Education and Outreach opportunities. Diversity and Inclusion are core values of the KICP, and all members of the KICP are expected to adhere to our Community Values. Information about the KICP can be found at the KICP website.

6. Two postdocs at University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign

Deadline: Nov 20, 2020

Applications are invited for two postdoctoral research associate positions in experimental cosmology at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Research will be in collaboration with Professors Jeffrey Filippini and Joaquin Vieira, as well as the broader cosmology faculty at Illinois. Start date is flexible, with preference for Spring/Summer 2021.

Opportunities are available in multiple current projects, with particular focus on: (1) camera development and commissioning for the Terahertz Intensity Mapper (TIM), a NASA-funded balloon-borne spectrometer mission using kinetic-inductance detectors; and (2) CMB instrumentation efforts for the South Pole Telescope (SPT), SPIDER, and CMB-S4. The position may include opportunities for deployment to Antarctica for instrument commissioning and operations. Candidates are expected to have earned or be close to earning a Ph.D. in Physics or Astronomy, to be experienced with relevant instrumentation (e.g. cryogenics, low-temperature detectors, superconducting electronics) and data analysis techniques, and to have strong oral and written communication skills. Applicants are encouraged to contact Prof. Filippini (jpf@illinois.edu) and Vieira (jvieira@illinois.edu) for further project details.
